Main Lesson Book Design at the Waldorf School (Grade 4)
Execution: Andrea Reiß
In this project, we design a vivid squid motif. Through the use of stencils and a specific wipe technique, velvety color surfaces and soft underwater gradients are created, making the main lesson book something very special.
First, make a stencil: Draw the outlines of a squid with a round head and curved tentacles onto thick paper and carefully cut out the shape. This negative form serves as the basis for our color work.
Place the stencil in the center of the main lesson book. Rub off red color powder, brush it into the form, and rub it gently with your finger. Thorough application makes the surface smudge-proof and gives it a velvety sheen.
Carefully lift off the stencil. Brush off excess powder with a cotton pad onto an extra piece of scrap paper and rub it in there to keep the rest of the book clean.
You can now add highlights with the eraser stick. Carefully erase a small oval area for the eye from the red form. The tentacles also receive three-dimensional highlights this way.
Use the sharp edge of a diagonally rubbed color stick to add fine drawing details. This allows the eye of the squid to be defined precisely.
Mix light red and golden yellow on an extra sheet to create a bright orange. Use a cotton swab to add small, round suction cups to the tentacles.
Now design the underwater world: Mix blue and yellow for green tones for water plants. For rocks or deep shadows, add a bit of red and distribute the powder roughly in the background.
Rub the powder in with your fingers or a cotton pad. Varying pressure creates soft transitions and structures that give depth to water plants and stones.
Finally, remove excess powder with a cotton pad. This simultaneously works the pigments firmly into the paper fibers, making the picture durable and soft.
The vivid picture of the squid is now finished – embedded in a colorful underwater landscape directly on your main lesson book page.
